Pastel Masterclass: Portrait
This course is designed to provide you with in-depth technical knowledge of the pastel medium applied to portrait painting, and enhance your powers of observation.
For early modern and modern European painters, portraiture required the study of anatomy and an understanding of how to report three-dimensional figures onto two-dimensional surfaces. Recording the countenance, motion, and character of their sitters, artists relied at once on observation and rules of spatial representation. Learning to work in this way, you will experiment with materials used by 17th and 18th-centuries pastel masters.
Three weekly live demonstrations, and tailored guidance and feedback between one session and the next will provide technical know-how, and the inspiration and time needed for you to forward your own practice.
Next course: Spring-Summer 2023

You have the option of ordering the following materials at an additional cost of £80 (postage in the UK included): a set of 3 pastel crayons hand-made with historical materials, similar to those used by 18th-century masters, a small vellum ground (15x20cm) primed with methods and materials similar to Jean-Étienne Liotard's.
